Kerbey the Cougar

The venerable institution that is Kerbey Lane Cafe is turning thirty years young this month. That officially makes her the cougar of the organic pancake scene. They are offering a rollback menu with dishes that date back to their first years in business. It’s available in May, 7 days a week from 7am to 11pm (no late night).

Things I Have Learned About THCWFF

The majestic spectacle that is the Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival has just come to an end. It capped off the Sunday Fair like a soggy exclamation point stuck in the Driftwood mud. The Fair seemed to lean more towards the wine end of things, with the Friday night Stars across Texas being more of the local restaurant scene.

My highlights from all the festivities were the ceviche from La Condesa, mussels from Uchi, meeting Dr. Kracker, Annie’s chocolate caramel dessert and the guy from Pine Ridge winery who hit on my wife.
Knowing what I know now, next year, the Stars event (even with the $ premium) will be my main target. Although watching snappily dressed women fall face first into mud-soaked straw can amuse me for hours, I’ll stick closer to town.

Tons of wine by the glass, Pei Mussels, House Cured Salmon, Brie Burgers and more. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Slow Food Austin. I’ll be the one covered in Truffle Mac&Cheese, giggling at the bar. Check the Event Calendar for more happenings.

Ryan Adams Pizza

Hailing from North Carolina, Sticks and Stones Clay Oven Restaurant has named every item on it’s menu after a Ryan Adam’s song. That is so kooky I can’t believe it has not happened in Austin. We have a few Willie named things around town (Red Headed Stranger @ Frank’s) but not a full menu. If you were thinking Wilco would be another good idea, someone else beat you to it.

Awards Season at the Beard House

I am definitely on board with the nominees listed above. I will be posting a review soon for La Condesa (sneak preview: I’m a fan). Olivia has also been invited to cook at the Beard House on April 1st. A honor in itself. They are heading up there with Loncito Cartwright of Loncito’s Lamb and the crew from Thunderheart Bison. A little bit of the ATX in NYC.
