Building a Pizza Oven: Custom Tiles

Say you built a pizza oven. It’s sitting in your backyard. Perfect snow white stucco dome. And you start thinking to yourself about how it is only a matter of time before a bird mars all that splendor. Plus, we can do better than snow white stucco, can’t we? Hell, this is a blank canvas. Better call an artist.

I headed down to South Austin (that’s where artists’ hang out) to roll out some tiles with Stefanie Distefano of Flamingo Ranch. Nationally known, her designs incorporate hand made tiles, mirrors and decorative figurine flourishes. When I said ‘hand made tiles’, I mean she makes them all herself. By hand. Herself.

The tiles are fired in her studio, glazed and re-fired in a kiln that gets almost as hot as my pizza oven. Silly kilns. I wonder if kilns are just ovens that wish they could make pizza.

The tiles are stunning. We had some issues with some South Austin dogs, though. They think they own the place. Check out more of Stef’s work on her website www.FlamingoRanch.com
