2010 Reheated: Antonelli’s Cheese Shop

Yes, there was a time when the Antonelli’s Cheese Shop didn’t exist. It was in 2009 (I know it’s hard to imagine). Easily the best Austin food story of 2010, John and Kendall have brought a razor sharp cheese focus to the forefront of the foodie scene. And, we are better eaters for it.

The Cheese Shop has had a ripple effect in menus across town. In an age when the Dessert Menu used to laugh at the Cheese Course, Fromage is making a comeback (check out Deegans’ pairings at Jeffrey’s).

Monument Chocolate Pie

Georgetown has a long standing restaurant, The Monument Cafe. I was just up that way and stopped in for lunch. It was OK. The Chocolate Pie was a whole other story. Stunning. Rich and creamy. I don’t even like desserts!

Would I drive up to Georgetown again to have lunch? Probably not. Would I drive up to get another Chocolate Pie? Absolutely!

The owners are opening two other restaurants in Georgetown, and also a market store with all local product. Look for a Monument Cafe in North Austin soon. Order your holiday pie online Here.

Delysia Chocolatier

Nicole Patel gave up the corporate world for chocolate. That makes me happy for two reasons. First, it’s always nice to meet someone who is going after their passion. Second, she makes really great tasting Truffles. (Added bonus, they look cool, too.) The Industrial Engineering world’s loss is our gain.

It could be her previous training helped in her current endeavor. Her flavor combinations are unique and unexpected. Chai? Merlot? Jalapeno? They all work and I think they do because they are applied with restraint. Not big dumb flavors that club you over the head. Subtle and balanced.

Watching the process was a treat. I guess anytime you get to play with chocolate, it’s a good thing. Above is the excess from filling the Truffle molds. Whichever chocolate style you like is represented: dark, milk and white chocolate.

Truffles are organized in collections: White Chocolate Collection, Nuts Collection, Coffee Collection, Tea Collection, Wine Collection, Berry Collection and the list goes on. She can also customize for special events (both flavors and chocolate graphics).

Pick some up locally at Stonehouse Vineyards, Becker Vineyards, The Salt Lick BBQ, Austinites or order online. Local chocolate! I love it.

Finally

Twisted chicken wire and chain link not sexy enough for you? (Don’t answer that.) Leave it to the Brits to come up with something that should have been done years ago. UK designer Matthew Hayward just dropped this bomb a few weeks ago at the Tent London Design Show.

Built out of cedar (we have some of that around here, don’t we?) and stainless steel, this modern coop holds two to four chickens and has “fox proof locks”. Does that mean I won’t be able to open it?
