2010 Reheated: Antonelli’s Cheese Shop

Yes, there was a time when the Antonelli’s Cheese Shop didn’t exist. It was in 2009 (I know it’s hard to imagine). Easily the best Austin food story of 2010, John and Kendall have brought a razor sharp cheese focus to the forefront of the foodie scene. And, we are better eaters for it.

The Cheese Shop has had a ripple effect in menus across town. In an age when the Dessert Menu used to laugh at the Cheese Course, Fromage is making a comeback (check out Deegans’ pairings at Jeffrey’s).

2010 Reheated: Best Bar-B-Que

There is no shortage of BBQ in Central Texas. And, as sure as the line is long at Franklin’s, everybody has a favorite. For me this year, it is Snow’s BBQ in Lexington.

With Ms. Tootsie working the pits, moist brisket and ribs, and the most welcoming BBQ atmosphere I have encountered, Snow’s is it for me. Sit out back and let the smoke wash over you.

Spice Trade on Sixth Street

Austin now has a spice specific store, Savory Spice Shop. In addition to The Steeping Room, Antonelli’s Cheese Shop, Con Olio Olive Oils… Austin is brimming with food and drink specific businesses. I love it. I’m going to start a leek only veg bar. Watch me. Leek Soup, Leekloaf, Leek Martini’s…

Say you haven’t been in a grocery store in a year? Spice is now at your fingertips. Smoked salts and all…

Take Two: Barr Mansion

Back in June of this year, Barr Mansion had a bad day. The historic barn that served as their event center burned to the ground. The picture above is from a few days ago. Melanie, Barr Mansion’s owner, is chatting with Kevin of Heritage Barns as a new structure goes up. The framing took one day and the finish-out should be completed by the end of January.

The Dutch style barn started it’s life in Mohawk Valley of upstate New York. The timbers are from Hemlock trees. I know what you are thinking, I didn’t think Hemlock were trees, just a tasty beverage. Need a barn, grist mill or carriage house? Kevin has a few in stock. I got my eye on a tasty little Hops barn from the 1870′s. Sweet!

Barr Mansion will be hosting the Sustainable Food Center’s Farm to Plate benefit on May 12th, 2011. One of our favorite events. Great opportunity to check out the new structure while having tasty bites for good cause.

Through the Generous Support of Confituras

I love cooking, photographing and writing about food in Austin. I couldn’t keep doing it without the support of our sponsors. To the group that keeps my burners lit, please welcome Confituras.

Stephanie makes the best small batch, locally sourced jams, jellies and preserves I have ever tasted. Offerings change depending what’s in season. Current flavors up for grabs:

whole cranberry tangerine sauce - a classic combination made from fresh, whole cranberries, organic tangerines from orange blossom farms, organic cane sugar, and lemon - nothing more, nothing less. ditch the can this year and go local. 8 and 4 ounce jars.
cranberry jalapeno jelly - made from fresh cranberries, organic jalapenos, organic cane sugar, this sparkling sweet-hot little number is the perfect guest at both a casual holiday meal (or leftover turkey sandwich) or at a fancy soiree. serve over fresh chevre or cream cheese, or creme with crackers or as a perky substitute to the can on your thanksgiving table. 8 and 4 ounce jars.
pear jam with fresh sage & honey - bartlett pears simmered with organic cane sugar and good flow wildflower honey, then infused with aged white balsamic vinegar and garden fresh sage. a subtle & lovely medley worthy of a good smothering of a sweet potato biscuit or port tenderloin. 8 and 4 ounce jars.
salted caramel pear butter - i’ve heard it said that some of my confituras are fit enough to be eaten simply with a spoon in a quite, out of the way place. if i were to ever do such a thing, and i might not admit it if i did, i would bring a jar of this silky butter with me. french butter pears, brown sugar and piloncillo, fleur de sel. yes. 8 and 4 ounce jars.

A Tale of Two Captures

This was the beginning of what was going to be a glorious day grilling in my backyard (Hot Italian Sausage, Peppers and Onions with Fireman’s Four Mustard). Birds chirping, coals crackling, camera clicking. Clicking, thumping, cur-thumpling.

The pictures above are from a perfectly functioning Canon 5D (lowly MK 1), before the wheels came off. Or more to the point, the mirror came off. Backup? The Apple iPhone 4. Not a hero, but not the enemy. The photo below was taken with it. The two above were taken with the 5D.

I have only met Steve Jobs once. It was during my cotillion dance (pictures deleted). He was a chaperon and I was a timid, blushing…it was a long time ago. If I bumped into him again, I would say “nice camera phone, but it’s no replacement for the real deal.” Moral of this story is “life isn’t all megapixels.” It’s more like, “megapixels get chicks, but wicked sharp optics, predictable camera body actions and balanced exposure yields superior image capture.”
