Austin Farmers’ Market: Fresh Catch

Wake up! Austin Farmers’ Market opened at 8:00 AM! We all know it has been hot for a while now. The heat has slowed down some of the produce at the market. The fish in the Gulf don’t care how hot it is in Austin. They have been swimming in all summer.

Roberto and Ross with San Miguel Seafood have a bounty of Gulf fish and shrimp today. As always, the Red Snapper looks beautiful. It came off the boat in Freeport, TX Wednesday night. $16/lb. for bone in/skin on, $18/lb. for fillet and $8/lb. for the whole fish. I’d go for the whole fish and then you have leftovers for fish stock.

Shrimp cocktail? Texas Brown Shrimp look stunning. $10/lb.-$17/lb. depending on what size you are looking for. It disappeared last year, but Flounder is back in. So is Grouper and Amberjack. No worries if you forgot your cooler, Roberto and Ross have bags and will ice down whatever you are buying.

Unless you are waist deep in blue waters of the Gulf, I don’t think you are going to find anything fresher than this. I am totally fired up. Now I just need to figure out what to cook. Shrimp Scampi? Fish Tacos? Bouillabaisse?
