Grow Your Own: August

TXMGA

O.K. kids! You’ve read the news. Sometimes food at the grocery store can kill you. Maybe, I overstated that (just don’t eat peanut butter, tomatoes, lettuce, dog food…).  Luckily, there is an alternative. A new trend is sweeping the nation: gardening. Apparently, it started in the prehistoric age; those caveman freaks! If you fall into the prior category (gardener, not cave-person) the Travis County Master Gardeners (yes, we have those) think it’s a good idea to do the following in August.

• Fertilize fruiting vegetables after first fruit set for higher productivity.
•Water planted areas deeply but infrequently during dry periods (I think now qualifies!)
•Prepare loose, well-drained beds for fall
•Time to plant: Corn, Eggplant, Pepper, Southern Pea, Winter Squash, Potatoes
(I would start these in containers, in the shade, except for the potatoes)
