Seeds, Powder and Leaves

Forget drug trafficking. Vasco Da Gama had it right. The spice trade is where it’s at. Although, it’s less profitable than it was. Someone needs to hammer that point home to Spice Islands. $4.95 for a bottle?!? Do they know that this is available everywhere now? Whole Foods and Central Market both have great bulk spice departments. The bags pictured here averaged 28 cents. Free trade!

  1. I got a single-drawer card catalog for my birthday this year that I use to store my bulk spices in alphabetical order. It is my favorite thing in the universe.

  2. Question: How do you keep track of or organize your bagged spices?

We used to line them up in an old tupperware container, which we’ve recently outgrown. With so many bags I find myself pulling them all out just to find one or to find out we are out of something. I thought about using refillable jars, but that would be a hassle in itself to do after each shopping trip. Plus for somethings we only need a couple teaspoons on hand and other things I like to get a lot of.

I then thought about using what I picture in my head similar to a library card catalog drawer and sorting the bags alphabetically.

  3. Ha, stupid me, just noticed Paula’s comment. “favorite thing in the universe” sounds like a good suggestion to me. I’ll have to look into getting something like that.

  4. I was thinking of getting some of those clip rods that hold bags of chips or nuts in convenience stores. They would all be lines up vertically on the wall. Just not sure where to get them.

  5. Darius: I believe my friend got the card catalog at an antique store. I’ve seen them in there in the past, too–one drawer, two drawer and four drawer, depending on how many spices you’ve got.

  6. Thanks, guys. I’m pretty pleased with it.

I was going to post a picture, but I’m running late for work. I’ll do it later if I can remember.
