Wine Me Dine Me

Cafe Josie’s April ‘Wine Me Dine Me’ dinner was killer. Five courses and no fluff. 1st: Walnut, Dried Pear and Gorgonzola Focaccia with Field Greens. 2nd: Lobster in Coconut Tomato Broth. 3rd: Mesquite Seared Yellowfin Tuna with Mango Jicama Slaw (pictured). 4th: Roast Pork Tenderloin with Pineapple Pasilla Chile and Rum Roasted Yams. 5th: Beef Tenderloin with Ancho Blackberry Jus and Poblano Parsnips. That’s five, how about one more? Raspberry Sorbet for dessert.

Gundlach Bundschu Winery was on hand to pair their grapes to the plates. It ran the gamut, from Gewurztraminer to Cabernet Sauvignon. Good stuff, all of it.

In the past ten years, many new chefs have come to Austin to hang out their shingle. Charles Mayes (pictured saucing plate) is not one of them. He has worked in some of Austin’s most loved restaurants: Gilligan’s, Treaty Oak Cafe and Mother’s starting in 1979. He has been working the line longer than some of these new guys have been alive. His food is fresh and focused: tropical flavors, smoky grill and playful sauces. I’m all about it. My favorite Fried Calamari in town? Charles makes it.

These special dinners sell out, so if you are interested May’s dinner has just been announced. A 6-course seafood dinner featuring a summer style menu that will be paired with a selection of white wines.
