My grandmother passed this recipe down to me. There was always a jar on her kitchen counter that you could dip into and find a few at the bottom. Affectionately called “Rocks”, they were my grandfather’s favorite. His mother started making them for him in 1948, but the recipe goes back to the 1920’s.
Rocks: 1 c shortening (half oleo), 1 & 1/4 c brown sugar packed, 3 eggs, 1 tsp vanilla, 3 c flour sifted, 1 tsp baking soda, 2 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp cloves, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 c chopped nuts, 1 c seedless raisins. Heat oven to 375. Mix together shortening, eggs and vanilla. Sift dry ingredients together and stir in. Stir in raisins and nuts. Use a rounded tbsp to create drops about 2″ apart on a greased baking sheet. Bake 10 min. Makes 5 doz. (but only 4 doz. will go in the cookie jar).
