Attention Austin, It’s Go Time

This weekend is the beginning of Eat Local Week, setup by Edible Austin. Marla Camp and Co. should be commended on undertaking this production. Movies, demos, bike rides, farm tours, ice skating, cook offs, hot tea, cool food, loopy drinks. It’s got it all. Running from Dec. 5th (this Saturday) to Dec. 12th, check the Events Calendar for more info.

New York In Austin

The old, gray lady shimmied her way down to Austin and took a look around. And, I must say, she pretty much hit the nail on the head. Food visits included the Salt Lick (standard operating procedure for out of town guests), the food trailers in South Austin (everybody needs a little 78704) and Justine’s (representing on the East Side). What?! No love for SoBur? You know, Top Notch isn’t going to be open for ever.

That New Bar Smell

In a town that is Tex-Mex a go-go, Fonda rocks it interior Mexico style. I don’t even think their kitchen has orange cheese. My favorite thing to do is site and the bar for apps and a Margarita or four (on the rocks, no salt). The bar itself is a cool copper with a fat rail that they just replaced. It still has that new Shellac smell. Mmm. And, good news for me, their happy hour just got a kick in the pants. Now, the whole appetizer menu (not just selected) is half off, 5pm-7pm, Monday through Thursday. The house wine is $5, house frozen and rocks Margaritas $4.95.

Porch Weather

The weather has finally broken and it’s safe to sit outside again without poaching yourself (braise?). The winner of the inaugural Best Austin Outdoor Food/Drink Porch With Rock Cage Things award goes to (drum roll)… Olivia! I wish I came up with this idea. What better to lean on during happy hour than seven hundred pounds of rock.

Frank’s Does Brunch

Frank’s has fired up their Sunday Brunch menu. And, true to form, they are keeping it simple and tasty for the downtown crowd. Below are a few of their offerings. The chicken and waffles thing still doesn’t work for me, but I’m all about Jalapeno hollandaise!
