Loquat Harvest

If you are lucky enough to have a Loquat tree, things should be getting pretty exciting in your yard right about now. Daily pinch tests, fending off squirrels and beating the bees to the ripest. Peaches get much attention this time of year (and rightly so), but I’m excited for my Loquat harvest.

The fruit has a cluster of five internal seeds that look like an alien colony ready to hatch. I’m juicing this year. Yep, hitting the Loquat sauce. So, I pop out those pesky seeds and run my bounty through the food mill. Then through a strainer to weed out any fibers that made their way through the mill. Pain the ass? You betcha! Time to invest in a juicer? Point me the way.

PS: I just had a Loquat cocktail prepared by the Tipsy Texan: Tito’s Vodka, Loquat, Sweet and Sour and Simple Syrup served over ice (very nice).

  1. Unfortunately, the late cold snap affected the loquat flower buds so no fruit from my tree this year.

  2. I am thrilled to hear of some one else, to have this tree, I live in Cheshire UK. Bought some pips from the fruit we ate while around the pool in Torresmalenia in Spain many yrs. ago & grew my 2 trees from the dried up pips. this year is the best yr. I have had for the fruit & I can not believe it has produced so many as I had to transplant the 2 trees into a bigger pot. May be that did the trick I have to say though I have kept the 2 in the conservatory over the bad winter season & the English spring. Feeding them with Tomrite & water regular. Such admiration has been given to my trees from many friends & families. Cheers Eileen
